چکیده

The fraction of solar wind which interacts with the dayside ionosphere and atmosphere of Venus was calculated assuming the presence ofmagnetic field fluctuations in the, • ionosheath region and taking into consideration the interaction with the upper neutral atmosphere extending above the ionopause. The Monte Carlo calculations indicated that fluctuations with Brms/(B) of 0.3, a not unreasonable value according to recent observations, implies that about 0.3% of solar wind may be absorbed on the average. Interactions with the upper neutral atmosphere due to charge xchange can decrease the shocked solar wind flux by 1-7%, depending on the ionopause altitude. Most of the fast H atoms produced by charge exchange interactions with the atmosphere escape, and only a negligible fraction can enter the atmosphere. The precipitation f solar wind ions into the atmosphere b cause of magnetic field fluctuations is not uniform over the daysid. e atmosphere but was calculated to be greatest near the terminator. The effect that these penetrating solar wind particles have on the structure of the ionosphere was calculated. It was found that while some of the energy deposition processes l ad to unique and observable signatures (e.g., a narrow Lyman a emission region), these penetrating solar wind particles do not appear to play a significant role in controlling the physical nd/or chemical structure of the daytime Venus ionosphere.

Charge-exchange in the Magnetosheaths of Venus and Mars: a Comparison

The amount of solar wind absorption due to charge-exchange in the Martian magnetosheath is evaluated and found to be about an order of magnitude less than that in the Venus magnetosheath. This difference might explain the observed difference in the scaled position and shape between the shocks at Venus and Mars. The lower solar wind absorption for Mars is attributable to the less dense hot oxyge...

Disappearing induced magnetosphere at Venus: Implications for close-in exoplanets

[1] The solar wind interaction with a planetary atmosphere produces a magnetosphere-like structure near the planet whether or not the planet has an intrinsic global magnetic field. In the case of planets like Venus or Mars, which have no global intrinsic magnetic field but possess a significant atmosphere, a magnetosphere is induced in the highly conducting ionosphere by the time-varying magnet...

The solar wind interaction with Venus through the eyes of the Pioneer Venus Orbiter

Venus has no internal magnetic dynamo and thus its ionosphere and hot oxygen exosphere dominate the interaction with the solar wind. The solar wind at 0.72AU has a dynamic pressure that ranges from 4.5 nPa (at solar max) to 6.6 nPa (at solar min), and its flow past the planet produces a shock of typical magnetosonic Mach number 5 at the subsolar point. At solar maximum the pressure in the ionos...

MESSENGER and Venus Express observations of the solar wind interaction with Venus

[1] At 23:08 UTC on 5 June 2007 the MESSENGER spacecraft reached its closest approach altitude of 338 km during its final flyby of Venus en route to its 2011 orbit insertion at Mercury. The availability of the simultaneous Venus Express solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field measurements provides a rare opportunity to examine the influence of upstream conditions on this planet’s solar win...

The Venus Ionosphere and Solar Wind Interaction

The current state of knowledge of the chemistry, dynamics and energetics of the upper atmosphere and ionosphere of Venus is reviewed together with the nature of the solar wind-Venus interaction. Because of the weak, though perhaps not negligible, intrinsic magnetic field of Venus, the mutual effects between these regions are probably strong and unique in the solar system. The ability of the Pio...
